Biographical notes:

Wilhelmina Vautrin was born in Secor, Illinois on September 27, 1886. She received a Bachelor's degree from Eureka College and a Master's degree from the University of Illinois. She served for 28 years as a missionary in China under the auspices of the United Christian Missionary Society. She was appointed Dean of Ginling College for women in Nanking. She protected the college and 10,000 students, women and children seeking refuge, when Japanese soldiers invaded Nanking in 1938. The stress of the situation and overwork caused great mental strain for Vautrin. She became ill and was urged to return to the United States to recuperate in 1940. She committed suicide in 1941 at the age of 54.
