Biographical notes:

Laura Isabel Smith was a life-long resident of Athens, Georgia. She was the granddaughter of a former mayor of Athens and her father was one of the founders of Smith, Boley and Brown Realtors and Insurance. "Miss Laura", as she was affectionately known, was also a cousin of Dean William Tate's wife and had been part of their wedding. In 1936, when Tate became the Dean of Freshmen at UGA, he asked Miss Laura, at that time a graduate student, to serve as his secretary. She stayed in this job for 36 years until Tate's retirement in 1971. After Tate's retirement, Miss Laura continued to work a UGA in the Judicial Affairs branch of the Office of Student Affairs. In 1981, she retired from the university after 45 years of service.
