Runyon, Theodore

Theodore Runyon is Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at Candler School of Theology. He was educated at Lawrence College (B.A., 1952) and Drew University (B.D., 1955). After serving as a Methodist minister in New York and New Jersey from 1952-1955, Runyon completed the Doctor of Theology at University of Goettingen, Goettingen, Germany. He returned to Goettingen for post-graduate study in 1964-1965, and also studied at the Universities of Tübingen and Constance in 1971-1972. Runyon and his wife, Cynthia Margaret Runyon, have three children. In 1958, Runyon was appointed Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at Candler School of Theology. He was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1966. Runyon served as the Acting Associate Dean of Candler from 1974-1975 and 1976, as well as the Chairman of the Department of Theological Studies in the Graduate School's Division of Religion from 1962-1970 and 1976. Runyon was active in several professional associations, including the American Association of University Professors (President, Emory Chapter, 1970-1971) and the American Academy of Religion. His honors include a Fulbright fellowship (1955-1957), the Pi Delta Epsilon and Campus Outstanding Faculty Award (1967), and the Emory Williams Award for Distinguished Teaching at the Graduate and Professional Level (1973). Runyon's articles and reviews have appeared in the Christian Advocate, the Drew Gateway, and the Candler Review. His books include John Wesley's Theology Today (Nashville, TN: Abingdon Press, 1998). Runyon retired from Candler in 1998.
