Biographical notes:

The sculptor Robert Ball Hughes, born in London, studied sculpture at the Royal Academy, where he exhibited in the 1820s. In 1829 he emigrated to the United States, settling in New York. Hughes played an important role introducing marble and cast bronze sculpture to America. Around 1840 he moved to Boston. A lack of patronage by the mid-1850s made him switch to minor arts, making cameos, wax portraits and pyrography on wood.
