The Institute's mission was primarily an educational one, and it set forth to study the economic issues facing the South and to aid the formation of public policy in confronting these issues. During its existence, the Institute received nearly four million dollars in Kellogg grants and matching funds from the state of North Carolina. The program functioned chiefly through the use of conferences and seminars, the establishment of graduate study programs, and the quarterly publication Agricultural Policy Review . The Institute also provided for and administered a number of short-term fellowship programs, bringing students and agricultural specialists and workers from the region to North Carolina State University for further study or training. The Institute was disbanded in 1970.
