Biographical notes:
Laura Harlfinger was a German national who apparently spent a part of her adult life in Stockton (Calif.), as a teacher of "music, French and German" according to the 1883-84 Stockton Directory. Her letter includes references to young Stockton women she met in Heidelberg, including Maria Cutting, Laddie Hart, May and Lila Hubbard and Miss Kirchner. Maria Cutting was the youngest daughter of realtor/insurance man and business manager for Capt. Charles Weber (founder of Stockton), Lewis M. Cutting. Maria (b. 1868) graduated from Field's Seminary (Oakland, Calif.) in 1890. May and Lila Hubbard were daughters of capitalist, Henry F. Hubbard, who died in 1887. Hubbard left $100,000 to each daughter at his death. Miss Harlfinger asks to be remembered to Dr. [Samuel] Langdon and Dr. [J.D.] Young. Dr. Langdon operated an early private mental hospital in San Joaquin County which also served for a time as the asylum for the state of Nevada and the territory of Arizona (1864-1880). Dr. Junius Davis Young (1859-1917) is mentioned as an eligible bachelor in Stockton newspaper society columns of the 1880s. Dr. Young was an assistant physician at the Stockton Asylum from the 1890s until his death. Miss Harlfinger requests that her friend remind Dr. Young to send her more money.
