Biographical notes:

Mike Hayden was the forty-first governor of Kansas, between 1987-1991. Hayden was a Republican. He was born on March 15, 1944 in Colby, Kansas and raised in Atwood, Kansas. He was a graduate of Kansas State University in wildlife conservation, 1966, and a graduate of Fort Hays State University in biology, 1974. He represented district 120 in the Kansas House of Representatives between 1973-1986, serving as speaker of the house between 1983-1986. Hayden lost his gubernatorial campaign for re-election to Joan Finney in 1990. After his service as governor, he was appointed to Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife at the U.S. Department of the Interior by President George H. W. Bush in 1991. Hayden has also served as the Secretary of Wildlife and Parks for Kansas, appointed by Governor Kathleen Sebelius in 2002.
