Biographical notes:

John Judson Hamilton (b. 1854) was a librarian, journalist, editor, and publisher. In the 1870s, he attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a master’s degree, and served as the University’s assistant librarian. Hamilton owned, published, and edited the Des Moines, Iowa, Daily News and edited several other newspapers and magazines. In 1911, he moved to California, serving on numerous civic organizations in Los Angeles and Pasadena. Hamilton also authored The Dethronement of the City Boss (1910).
