Svendsen, Juris
Biographical notes:
Svendsen was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1938, and later studied philosophy and speech and drama in the United States. From 1959 to 1962 he was a graduate student in the drama department at Stanford. After leaving Stanford Svendsen taught drama and drama theory at UC Berkeley and at the California Arts Institute. He was active in Bay Area theater-life as director, actor, trnslator, playwright, and teacher. He specialized in Brechtian and post-Brechtian experimental theater. He had contacts with and collaborated with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and the Bread and Puppet Theatre for which he also translated Brecht's TURANDOT. During his frequent visits to East and West Germany in the 1960s and 1970s he collected materials and publications relating to Brecht and the Berliner Ensemble. He died in Berkeley in 1994.
