1836 nominated to the Bengal Civil Service; 1837-1847 served in a variety of revenue and judicial posts in the North-Western Provinces; 1847 chief assistant to resident of Lahore; 1848 political officer to the commander-in-chief, served in Second Anglo-Sikh War; 1850 deputy commissioner of the Punjab; 1854 magistrate and collector of Mainpuri; 1857 served in the Indian Mutiny; 1858-1863 judge of Mainpuri; 1860 CB; 1865-1872 captain in the Worcestershire militia
