Biographical notes:
The project to have a portrait painted of Frank Porter Graham (1886-1972) was initiated by University of North Carolina students in 1949, and taken up again in 1953 through the office of the Dean of Student Affairs, not as an official act of the University, but as a project of friends of Graham.
