The Utah Section of the American Society of Range Management (ASRM) was originated at a meeting of ASRM members in Salt Lake City May 7, 1949. A petition was sent to the national office, signed by all in attendance, requesting a section be organized in Utah. On the 20th of June the same year, notification of approval was received by the elected chairman, Harold J. Burback, and the Utah Section of the American Society of Range Management was born.

In 1957 a student chapter was instituted at Utah State University. Records are unsure of the date of activation, but April of 1957 is the accepted date. The second student chapter was organized at BYU in 1964-65 with Jordan Pederson as the first president.

Since the beginning, tours of rangeland have been a part of the section activities. Almost all of Utah has been covered n the past years, with parts of other states. Also, a scholarship was established in the late 50's, and later other awards for excellence in the field of management came into being.

From the original 22 members of the organization, the enrollment rose and peaked in 1975 with 273 members.

The section is still (of date) alive and active in Utah.
