Young Israel of Parkchester (Bronx, New York, N.Y.)
Biographical notes:
The Parkchester section of the Bronx was developed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in the early 1940s as a self-contained, middle class housing project. The Young Israel of Parkchester was founded in 1940 and first met in temporary quarters until a synagogue building was constructed in 1950. During the orthodox congregation's most vibrant period during the 1950s-1960s, it had a large membership, and ran a Talmud Torah, a robust adult education institute (through Yeshiva University's Department of Adult Education), and various other community programs. After many years of declining membership, the synagogue building was sold in 2003, and the small number of remaining congregants relocated to a storefront location.
