1828-1858 second lieutenant, Bombay artillery; 1836 lieutenant; 1838-1842 served in First Anglo-Afghan War with the Bombay column, army of the Indus; 1841 commandant of the Sind irregular horse; 1842 assistant political agent, eastern Kachhi; c 1846 recruited a second regiment named Jacob's Horse (incorporated into the Indian army in 1860); 1846 additional command, Silladar cavalry regiment; 1847-1858 political superintendent and commandant of the frontier of upper Sind; 1848 captain; 1848 brevet-major; 1855 lieutenant-colonel; 1856 acting commissioner, Sind; 1856 aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria; 1856 colonel; 1856 brigadier-general.
