Cary family.
Biographical notes:
Family of Shepard Cary, U.S. representative and businessman from Houlton, Me.; involved in extensive lumber operations and also in agricultural and mercantile pursuits; state legislator (1832-1853, 1862); elected as Democrat to 28th Congress in 1844 and served until 3 Mar. 1845; candidate of Liberty Party for Governor in 1854. Family members include his siblings: Jonathan Haskell Cary, William H. Cary, Jr., and Catherine (Cary) Bowen and her husband, Capt. Isaac Bowen. Shepard Cary was married to Susannah Whitaker and they had three sons: Theodore, George, and Jefferson Cary. Theodore was editor of Aroostook Times in Houlton; George served with 1st Maine Cavalry and later become a physician and surgeon, and Jefferson Cary, also a physician who practiced in Houlton before moving to Caribou, Me. Theodore and first wife, Althea Dodge, had only one child who survived infancy, Walter Cary, who became a lawyer. He married Florence Emerson and had a daughter, Catharine (Cary) Moses.
