Charles Jones was born in Chester, S.C. in 1937. His family moved to Charlotte, N.C. when he was 10. As a young man, Jones became very active politically on both a local and national level. This included participation with the Freedom Riders during the Civil Rights demonstrations of the 1960s. He graduated from Howard University Law School and is a practicing lawyer in Charlotte, N.C.
