Butte's mechanics first organized as the Mechanics Union in 1881 under the auspices of the Butte Workingmen's Union; in 1888 the International Association of Machinists was founded in Atlanta and Butte' s Mechanics Union reorganized as Montana's Fightin' 88's; the group was officially chartered on June 7, 1889 as Local 88 (in recognition of the year organized).
