Biographical notes:

Philo J. Chapman served as a drummer for Company G of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry, 3rd Regiment from 1861 until his death in the Andersonville Prison in 1864. Prior to and throughout the war he corresponded with his wife, Sarah Florence, of Indianola, Iowa. Sarah remarried after Philo's death and was active in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
