Learmonth, Charles Cuthbertson, 1917-1944.

Dates:
Birth 1917
Death 1944

Biographical notes:

Airman. Joined the RAAF in 1938. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in New Guinea in 1943. Transferred to Potshot, an Australian-American base on the Exmouth Gulf in W.A. While on operation off Rottnest on 6 January 1944, his plane crashed and all the crew were lost. However, during the accident, he maintained radio contact with base which provided vital information for solving the mystery of many Beafort bomber crashes. He was posthumously awarded a bar to his DFC, and the Potshot base was renamed Learmonth in his honour.
