Biographical notes:

The Bidermann family originated from Winterthur, Switzerland. James Antoinne Biderman emigrated to the United States in 1813 to audit Du Pont Co. records. His father had already made a substantial investment in the firm. After completing his review, James Antoinne became interested in the manufactory and he joined the firm in 1815. He traveled frequently, writing long, descriptive letters on travel conditions, current affairs and business matters to the company. On September 16, 1816 he married Evelina du Pont; their only child, James Irʹenʹee, was born on September 29, 1817. In 1827, the family went to Paris in order to settle the estate of Jacques Bidermann. James Antoinne inherited his father's stock in the Du Pont Co. and eventually assumed temporary leadership from 1834 to 1837 upon the death of E.I. du Pont. In 1837, the Bidermanns took another trip to France to buy the remaining European shares the Du Pont Co. While the Bidermanns were in Paris, James Irʹenʹee entered the Ecole Polytechnique and a house was built for the family in Delaware.

James Antoinne and Evelina returned to Delaware in 1839 to a property they named Winterthur. Their time was devoted to completing the house and work on the farm. James Irʹenʹee remained in France and worked as a civil engineer; he married Gabrielle Camille. When Evelina died in 1863, James Antoinne went to France to live with his son; he died in Paris on June 8, 1865.
