Biographical notes:

The President of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is the University's Chief Administrative Officer, and has general authority and responsibility for the administration of the University. The President is selected by the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System.

According to the Rules and Regulations of the UT System, some of the major duties of the Office of the President are to:

Develop and administer plans and policies for the program, organization, and operation of UTSA. Interpret the System policy to the staff, and interpret the institution's programs and needs to the System Administration and to the public. Develop and administer policies relating to students, and where applicable, to the proper management of services to patients. Recommend appropriate operating budgets and supervise expenditures under approved budgets. Appoint, or establish procedures for the appointment of, all faculty, staff, and student committees.

The first UTSA president was Arleigh B. Templeton, serving from 1969 to 1973. Subsequent presidents include Peter T. Flawn (1973-1978), James W. Wagener (1978-1990), Samuel A. Kirkpatrick (1990-1999), and Ricardo Romo (1999-present, as of October 2008).
