The mission of the Kansas Arts Commission is to provide opportunities for the people of Kansas to experience, celebrate, and value the arts throughout their lives. The commission serves artists, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government agencies through grants to support the arts in communities. They also provide seminars, workshops and one-on-one consulting in business development, grant writing, strategic planning, marketing, and other areas of nonprofit arts management. The Kansas Arts Commission was founded in 1966 under the name of the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission (it changes its name in 1973) and continues to be funded through the Kansas legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Kansas Arts Commission (KAC), formerly called the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission (KCAC), was formed in April 1965 by the enactment of Kansas House Bill 617. The Commission shortened its name to Kansas Arts Commission in 1973. Based in Topeka, Kansas, the commission is made up of 12 governor appointed commissioners from the state. The function of the KAC is to "support, foster and develop the arts and their practice within the state" of Kansas which is primarily done through financial support.
