Lawyer; born in Utica, N.Y.; attended Litchfield Law School in 1826 and 1827 and then went to Stamford, Conn., and studied law in the office of his future brother-in-law Charles Hawley; moved to New York City and in 1832 was the first lawyer to be appointed Commissioner of Deeds for the States and Territories; later admitted as a solicitor to the Court of Chancery in New York and attorney to the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
