Douglas Lockwood, an outstanding journalist and prolific writer, was a war correspondent in the Pacific during World War II, and had been with the Herald and Weekly Times group for 40 years, spending 23 years in the Northern Territory and 4 years in Papua New Guinea. Since 1975 he had been managing editor of the Bendigo Advertiser. Mr Lockwood wrote 15 books about Australia, several of them recipients of prestigious literary awards.
