Prioleau, William H., Jr.
Biographical notes:
William Hutson Prioleau, Jr. was born on November 22, 1897 in Summerville, South Carolina. He attended Porter Military Academy in Charleston, South Carolina and Woodberry Forest School in near Charlottesville, Virginia. He graduated from the University of South Carolina then went on to Johns Hopkins Medical School. He completed medical school in 1923 and stayed at Johns Hopkins where he completed his internship. From 1924-1927, Prioleau served at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio for residency training where he developed an interest in thyroid diseases. He then returned to Charleston to practice general surgery and joined the Medical College of South Carolina. He served as clinical Professor of Surgery and Chief of Roper Hospital Surgical Service. He also acted as Presidents of local medical societies as well as the South Carolina Medical Association, South Carolina Surgical Society, The Southern Surgeons Club, and The Southern Surgical Association. He was an active faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the Medical College and was appointed Professor of Surgery Emeritus until his retirement in 1987. He married Sara Parsons Prioleau and their two sons followed their father into the medical profession. He died on June 14, 1989.
