Biographical notes:

Physician, city and county official, and New Jersey state legislator; born in Orange, New Jersey, December 4, 1796; graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), 1816; attended medical lectures at the University of Pennsylvania and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City; licensed by the Medical Society of New Jersey, 1820; practiced in Orange (at first in association with his father, Isaac); served in the New Jersey Assembly, 1837, as sheriff of Essex County, New Jersey, 1849-1851, and as mayor of Orange, 1860-1862; died October 1, 1882.

William Pierson (1796-1882), an Orange, N.J. (Essex County) physician, active in local and state government. Pierson studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (N.Y.), and was licensed by the Medical Society of New Jersey in 1820. Dr. Pierson was a New Jersey state legislator (1837-1838), Sheriff of Essex County (1846-1850), and the first mayor of Orange. His father, Dr. Isaac Pierson (1770-1833), was also an Orange physician and sheriff.
