F.E.W. Patten was born in Missouri and served in the Mexican American War. He moved to Denver, Colorado Territory in 1862 and again to Virginia City, Montana Territory, in 1863. After briefly working as a freighter, Patten established a general store at Virginia City in 1864. He moved to Butte in 1881 where he worked in the insurance business. He married Mary A. Armstrong at St. Joseph, Missouri in 1872.
