Biographical notes:

Halsted Billings Vander Poel (1911-2003) began collecting rare books and manuscripts, antiques and art as a young man, but after moving to Rome in 1956, he also turned his attention to the study of Pompeii. For the next forty years, Vander Poel devoted considerable time and financial resources to creating an extensive research library and archive documenting the archaeological investigations at Pompeii.
