Hal Porter, author and artist, was born in Melbourne and worked as a cadet reporter, schoolmaster, librarian, director and actor. In 1961 he became a full time writer and received Commonwealth Literary Fund Fellowships, 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968, subsidies, 1961 and 1972, and a three year grant, 1974-1976. He is best known for the autobiographical 'Watcher on the cast-iron balcony'.
