Biographical Note
The Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz, chartered in 1929, has approximately 50 active members plus Sustaining and Life members. The Club sponsors several fundraising events during the year. The club makes scholarship and citizanship awards to outstanding young people, training awards to re-entry women, honors women who have made exceptional contributions to the welfare of other women, and supports community projects.
What is Soroptimist? Soroptimist International, founded in 1921 in Oakland, California, has grown to be the largest classified women's organization in the world. There are more than 2,800 clubs with 95,000 members in over 94 countries.
Soroptimist is an international service organization of professionals and executives of all ages, working together for personal and professional growth and service to others. The word "Soroptimist" derives from the Latin meaning "the best for women." Our intent is to further opportunities, growth and recognition for all people.
The Soroptimist ideals of high ethical standards in business and professional life, human rights, advancement of the status of women, and international goodwill and understanding - all within the spirit of service - distinguishes this organization and its membership.
