Biographical notes:
Captain Charles Swanston (1789-1850)was a banker and owned the Derwent Bank of Hobart, which was the first bank to open for business in Melbourne (1838). He was a member of the Port Phillip Association formed by John Batman for the express purpose of exploring and claiming the Port Phillip District.

Born in Scotland, at the age of 16 Swanston was commissioned a lieutenant in the Madras establishment of the East India Company's army. His journey from England to India, undertaken in 1814 on horseback over 1500 miles, was accomplished in 48 days. In September 1828 Swanston left India for Van Diemen's Land, where he became a prominent banker and merchant.
