Johnson, Douglas (Vocalist)

Douglas V. Johnson was born in 1900 and graduated from Virginia Military Institute (VMI)in 1922. He served in the Virginia National Guard (1922-1923); was commissioned 2nd lieutenant of field artillery, United States (U.S.) Army, in 1923 and advanced through the grades to major general in 1955. He served in various assignments in the U.S. and the Philippines (1923-1942); operations division, War Dept. General Staff (1942-1944); assistant G-3, VII (7th) Corps, United Kingdom and France (1944); commanding officer, 233rd Field Artillery Group, Pacific (1944-1946); chief of staff (CoS), Western Pacific Base Command, and also commanding officer, Army Ground Forces, Saipan (1946-1947); assistant G-3, 1st Army, Governor's Island (1947); staff, National Security Council, and also assistant chief and chief, Plans Division, G-3, Dept. of the Army General Staff (1947-1951); commanding general, 43rd Infantry Division Artillery, Augsburg, Germany (1952-1953); assistant chief of staff, G-3, and also deputy chief of staff for operations, U.S. Army, Europe (USAREUR), Heidelberg, Germany (1953-1955); deputy chief umpire, Exercise SAGEBRUSH, Langley Field, Virginia (1955); and deputy commanding general and also chief of staff, 3d Army, Fort McPherson, Georgia (1956-1958); and appointed deputy director for Strategic Plans, the Joint Staff in March 1958.
