Biographical notes:

Emeritus professor of Computer Science, Cornell University.

Hartmanis was born in Latvia, received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Marburg in Germany, his Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Kansas City in 1951, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1955. After teaching at Cornell and Ohio State, he joined the General Electric Research Laboratory in 1958, where he developed principles of computational complexity theory. In 1965 he became a professor at Cornell and was on of the founders and first chairman of its computer science department. In 1993, he won the Turing Award along with Richard Stearns.
