Biographical notes:
William Elsey Connelley was born in Kentucky in 1855. He taught school there for ten years. In 1881 he moved to Bonner Springs, Kansas, where he assumed the principalship of the public schools there. In 1882 he was appointed deputy county clerk of Wyandotte County, and was elected county clerk in 1883 and 1885. He served in the Kansas State Historical Society as president in 1912 and secretary in 1914. He was the author of many historical articles and books including History of Kansas, State and People, a five volume work that was published in 1928.

William Elsey Connelley (1855-1930), avocational historian and author, was born in Kentucky but spent his adult life in Kansas as a teacher, county clerk, businessman (wholesale lumber) and banker. From 1914 till his death in 1930, he was Secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society.
