Biographical notes:

Col. Burgess Ball (1749-1800) was related to George Washington through marriage to his niece. He was a volunteer aide to Washington and later recruited and equipped a regiment of infantry from the Fredericksburg area. Captured in 1780 at Charlestown during the revolutionary war, he retired to "Traveler's Rest" in Lancaster County and later moved to Loudoun County near Leesburg where he died.

Dr. Charles B. Ball, son of Col. Burgess Ball, began practicing medicine in Leesburg about 1800 until after the Civil War. He served in the House of Delegates, 1849-52 and Virginia Senate, 1857-1865.
