Dr. H. Robert Otness was born Herman Robert Otness on November 22, 1907 in Moscow, Idaho. After graduating from high school and college, he graduated from New York University in 1939 where he received his doctor of clinical psychology degree. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. Following his discharge in 1946 he joined the psychology department at Washington State College for one year before becoming the director of research and training at the Rainier State School in Buckley, Washington. Dr. Otness was the Director of Research and Training for Rainier State School for 1947-1950. Illness in the family required his return to Moscow, ID. In 1950 he returned to Moscow, ID and became an associate professor in the University of Idaho, Dept. of Psychology where he remained until his retirement in 1971. He married Lillian Woodworth on Jul. 15, 1945. They had one son. Dr. H. Robert Otness passed away on April 21, 1995. His wife, Lillian, pre-deceased him on Jul. 22, 1994 in Moscow, ID.
