Christowe, Stoyan, 1898-

Stoyan Christowe was born in Ottoman Macedonia in 1898 and immigrated to the United States in 1912. After his arrival in America at age 13, he worked a number of jobs, including laying tracks for the Great Northern Railway in Montana. He taught himself English, studied journalism at Indiana University, and began a distinguished literary career that included working as a reporter for The Chicago Sun Times, writing over twenty book reviews in The New York Times, and writing six books, During World War II, he served as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. military.

In 1944, Stoyan Christowe moved to Vermont, where he began a new life of public service. He served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1951 to 1955 and then as a member of the Vermont State Senate from 1959 to 1972. In 1980, he returned to his homeland of Macedonia, where he was honored as a hero. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Sts. Cyril and Methodist University and was made an honorary member of the Macedonian Academy of the Arts and Science. Stoyan Christowe died in 1995 and is buried in Dover, Vermont.
