Biographical notes:
In 1965, under Chancellor Paul Sharp's reorganization of the campus administrative structure, a vice chancellorship for advanced studies and research was created with responsibility for all graduate studies and research activities. The new position was assumed by Professor Physics Everett D. Palmatier. In 1967, however, the position lapsed; and its responsibilities were reassigned.

Under Chancellor Paul Sharp's reorganization of the campus administrative structure, a vice chancellorship for advanced studies and research was created in 1965 with responsibility for all campus graduate studies and research activities. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor were the Dean of the Graduate School, who supervised graduate admissions and graduate academic and professional programs, and a new Dean of Research Administration responsible for all research and training grants and contracts and for foundation funding proposals. The Vice Chancellor for Advanced Studies and Research also had direct administrative jurisdiction over the university's research institutes and the Computation Center.
On 1 September 1965, Kenan Professor of Physics Everett D. Palmatier assumed the new vice chancellorship. On 31 August 31 1967, Dr. Palmatier resigned as Vice Chancellor for Advanced Studies and Research. Chancellor J. Carlyle Sitterson did not appoint a successor, but rather reassigned the responsibility for the research institutes and centers to the Provost, Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, and Dean of the Graduate School.
