International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. Local 74 (Ottumwa, Iowa)

Dates:
Active 1946
Active 1979

Biographical notes:

The UAW chartered Local 74 in April 1942. The United Farm Equipment Workers (FE) tried to organize the Ottumwa Deere Plant without success before the UAW succeeded. All Deere workers in the plant were UAW members, unlike other plants where skilled tool room workers were members of another union. Local 74 fought to move the plant from seasonal to year-round production and for a guaranteed annual wage. Many Local 74 members were active in local and state politics.
