Biographical notes:
Frank Rinehart Eyerly was born 3 June 1903 to Josiah and Celia (Grandrath) Eyerly in Newton, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa from 1923 to 1927. He joined the staff of the Des Moines Register and Tribune in 1927 and moved through the ranks of reporter, copy editor, telegraph editor, news editor, and assistant managing editor. In 1946 he became managing editor.
During his tenure as managing editor, Register and Tribune staff members were awarded eight Pulitzer Prizes as well as dozens of other awards for distinguished jounalism. Eyerly retired from his position as managing editor in 1969.
Eyerly served as a director of the Des Moines Register and Tribune Company, vice president and a director of the Register and Tribune Syndicate, Inc.; and a director of Commercial Printing, Inc. He was a member of numerous associations including the Associated Press Managing Editors Association (President, 1957); American Society of Newspaper Editors; Des Moines Club; Century Club of New York; National Press Club of Washington, D.C.; and the professional journalism society Sigma Delta Chi.
Frank Eyerly married Jeannette Hyde, a well-known author of books for young adults, in 1932; they had two children. Frank R. Eyerly died 18 March 1997 in Des Moines, Iowa.
