George Sigurd Hage was born on November 4, 1914 in Madelia, Minnesota. He earned a B.A. in journalism in 1937, a master's degree in 1950 and Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of Minnesota. From 1937-1942, Dr. Hage worked as a reporter and critic for the Columbus (Ohio) Citizen. After four years in the Air Force during World War II, Dr. Hage joined the faculty of the school of journalism at the University of Minnesota in 1946. He was promoted from instructor to associate professor in 1957 and then to professor in 1965. He began to teach in the American Studies graduate program in 1968. Dr. Hage retired from the University of Minnesota in 1982 as professor emeritus. In 1983, Dr. Hage won the Distinguished Teaching in Journalism award from the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. George S. Hage died on October 29, 1993.
