Richard Whitehead Young was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 19 April 1858 to Joseph Angel and Margaret Whitehead Young. He attended the University of Utah from 1874 to 1877 and then West Point from 1878 to 1882. He then received his law degree from Columbia University in 1884. He served in various military capacities, including frontier duty at Fort Douglas, Utah, until he resigned from the army to practice law in 1889. He re-entered the military service during the Spanish-American War (1890s) and again during World War I. He returned to Salt Lake City to practice law in 1919 and died that same year of appendicitis.
