Army officer.
Capt. Irvine served with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and the 13th U.S. Infantry during the Civil War before serving periodically at Fort Rice, Fort Thompson, and Fort Sully in Dakota Territory with the 22nd U.S. Infantry from 1866 to 1873. His wife, Margaret Louisa Halsted Irvine, and their three children joined him at Fort Sully in 1867. In 1878 Irvine's daughter, M. Louisa, returned to Dakota as a missionary to the Lakota from Cheyenne River Agency at Oahe Mission near Fort Sully. She later married Thomas L. Riggs, director of the mission.
