Wilbur Richard Knorr, historian of science and the classics, was educated at Harvard (B.A. in 1966 and Ph. D. in 1973). He taught at the University of California in Berkeley and at Brooklyn College before joining the Stanford faculty 1979 as an assistant professor in the History of Science program, which he helped to develop. Although his interests were extraordinarily broad, his focus was on the history of ancient Greek mathematics and its medieval continuations. He died in 1997.
