Biographical notes:

Theodore Brantly was born in Wilson Count, Tennessee on February 12, 1851, the son of Edwin and Eliza (Brown) Brantly. He graduated from Stewart College in 1874 and then studied law at Cumberland University. He taught ancient languages at Lincoln University in Illinois before being appointed to the faculty at the College of Montana in Deer Lodge in 1887. He began practicing law in 1889 and became a district judge in Deer Lodge in 1893. He was elected chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court in 1898. He served until 1916. Brantly married Lois Reat in 1891. They had three children. Theodore Brantly died in Helena, Montana, on September 16, 1922.
