Biographical notes:

Sir George Baker, physician, was the son of the vicar of Modbury, Devonshire, educated at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1745, then proceeded M.D. in 1756, and the following year was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Baker made an important addition to medical knowledge in the discovery that the Devonshire colic and the colic Pictonum were forms of lead poisoning.
