David McMurtrie Gregg, farmer, diplomat, and Union cavalry general during the Civil War. Born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1833. Graduated from West Point in 1855, and was assigned frontier duty for six years before the start of the Civil War. Led cavalry troops during the Battle of Antietam and the Peninsular and Gettysburg Campaigns. Married Ellen F. Sheaff in October 1862 during a furlough. Resigned from service in February 1865 and settled with his wife in Reading, Pennsylvania. Applied for reinstatement to the Army in 1868 but did not receive the commission he requested. Appointed U.S. Consul to Prague in 1874. Gregg died in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1916.
