Biographical notes:

The Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies comprised twenty-eight mutual insurance firms that specialized in industrial fire insurance. The oldest such firm was founded in Providence, R.I., in 1835, and the organization spread outward from the New England textile industry to cover a wide range of industrial firms throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Associated Companies maintained a central testing laboratory for testing and accrediting fire control apparatus and electrical equipment, as well as centralized engineering and appraisal departments. The Plan Division produced and distributed fire insurance maps and plans of individual insured properties.
