Author, English professor; born August 18, 1939 in Oak Park, Illinois; graduated from Wheaton College (Ill.), 1961; married Roberta Ann Hill, August 19, 1961; earned an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University under Elliott Coleman, 1962; earned a Ph. D. from Harvard University under Robert Lowell, 1968; wrote dissertation on Samuel T. Coleridge's poetry; assistant professor of English at Dartmouth College, 1967-1975; published first book of poetry, The Beasts and the Elders, 1973; visiting professor at Princeton University and Wheaton College (Ill.), 1975-1977; assistant professor at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, 1976-2000; published first fantasy novel, Alpha Centauri, 1980; published most famous novel, Whalesong, 1981; translated into many languages and the first book in the Whalesong trilogy; also published work in many journals and anthologies; won writing awards from Poetry and The Transatlantic Review, and is past fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts; retired as professor emeritus from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, 2000.
