Biographical notes:

Alfred Ernest (Alf) Bauman was born January 3, 1920, at Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ernest and Emily (Langman) Bauman. He graduated from Chicago's Austin High School in 1938 where he and Bill de Correvont were celebrated members of the school football team. Austin won the Chicago Public League football championships in 1936 and 1937. Bauman entered Northwestern University in the fall of 1938. He attended the university through the 1941-1942 academic year and was inducted into the United States Army in the fall of 1942. At Northwestern Bauman lettered as a tackle on the football teams of 1939, 1940 and 1941. He won recognition for his play on the Northwestern line and was named to numerous all-American teams in 1940 and 1941. After completing his military service, Bauman broke into professional football in 1947 with the Chicago Rockets of the All-American Football Conference. That same year the Rockets traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. From 1948 through 1950 he was a member of the N.F.L. Chicago Bears. Bauman died on March 2, 1979.
